Life in Barnsley
Barnsley is in the centre of the UK, just off the M1 motorway, between Sheffield and Leeds. It has a population of just over 218,000, with a friendly, small-town feel, excellent facilities and one of the cheapest “shopping baskets” in the country.
The town offers a variety of sporting, social and cultural activities, and the cosmopolitan cities of Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield are within easy reach, so students can enjoy the best of both worlds - small town costs and big city facilities.
Barnsley is very student-orientated with many pubs offering student specials on various nights of the week. The nightclubs are all low priced and have excellent student nights. Barnsley is also only a short train or bus ride away from Sheffield and Leeds which offer wide ranging social activities.
For sports fans, Barnsley has the Metrodome Sports Complex close to the town centre. The town also has its own football team, Barnsley FC.
A short bus or train ride will take you to Meadowhall, one of Europe’s largest and finest shopping centres, or to the Elsecar Heritage Centre, a £5m visitor attraction with craft shops, steam railway and Science Centre.
You can also shop much closer to home in Barnsley's Mall. There's a variety of great shops including, TK Max, Next, Primark and Woolworths.
If you like to get away from it all, then the Peak District National Park overlaps the town’s western fringes - miles of footpaths and spectacular Pennine landscapes.
