Student Finance

Financial SupportFinancial Support

The University Centre aims to ensure that, as far as possible, no student is prevented from following a Higher Education course by adverse financial circumstances.

If this is your first full-time Higher Education course you may be entitled to HE Student Support from your Local Education Authority (LEA) or the Scottish Education Department. You should apply for support as soon as possible.

Student Maintenance Loans

The Student Loans Company administers the Government’s loans scheme. To be eligible for a loan, you must be ordinarily resident in the UK. These loans are meant to help cover basic living costs whilst at Univeristy. The amount you borrow can vary but you will not need to repay any money borrowed until you are earning more than £15,000 per year. For students starting their courses in 2006 or later the Government will write off all student loan balances which are left unpaid 25 years after the students have left their course.

For further information on loans contact your Local Education Authority.

Fees And Grant

The Government is introducing a new tuition fee system for courses starting in 2006. Rather than paying tuition fees upfront, students will not pay anything until after they have graduated and are earning at least £15,000 per year. There is also a Government grant of £2,700 per year for students from lower income families. In addition the University of Huddersfield is introducing a series of non-returnable grants dependent on the level of students’ family income.

For more details on tuition fees and the financial assistance you may be entitled to receive, please contact the University’s Student Finance Officer on 01484 473618

Are you over 25, married, self-supporting or looking after children?

Help is available for mature or married students. You are regarded as an independant student if you are aged 25 or over before the start of the academic year, or have supported yourself finalcially for at least three years before you start your course.

  • You are just as entitled to the same grants as students who start university straight from school.
  • If you have children to look after, a childcare grant of £8,840 per year is payable while you are studying full-time.
  • Mature students and other students with children may also be able to get help from univeristy funds.

Financial assistance for teacher training

Students taking the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for secondary initial teacher training and full and part-time students taking the Cert. Ed/PGCE (Post-Compulsory Education & Training) currently apply to their LEA to have their tuition fees paid (subject to status).

Students taking the full-time PGCE for secondary initial teacher training and the Cert. Ed/PGCE (Post-Compulsary Education and Training) also receive a training bursary. The bursaries for the post-compulsary education and training sector have been confirmed only for academic year 2005/6.

Part-time Certificate in Education and PGCE students can also claim fee payment from their LEA

This is the current position and details may change. Please contact us nearer the time if you are considering a teaching course that starts from September 2006. Also, visit the Department for Education and Skills website for more details www.dfes.gov.uk

Debt can be a worry - but a student loan is not like any other sort of debt. It is not like a mortgage where the larger your loan the larger your monthly repayments. Nor like a credit card where you may be charged interest several times higher than the rate of inflation. Instead, the amount you owe is linked to inflation and only increases in line with the cost of living.
