Church Street Facelift

Head of the University Centre, Dr Tim ThorntonExterior developments have begun to replace the windows on Barnsley’s historic Church Street building, which became the University Centre Barnsley in August 2005.

Scaffolding has been erected to replace all 227 steel windows, and it is expected to remain in place for three months. All work on the building will be completed prior to student enrolment in September 2006.

The replacement windows will be similar to the originals, with the intention of preserving the characteristic 1930’s architecture:

“The replacement windows will retain the look of the existing building but ensure 21 st century standards of comfort and insulation,” says the Head of the University Centre, Dr Tim Thornton. “This is another sign of the way the University Centre is taking forward the proud tradition of education in Barnsley, offering excellent higher education to all who can benefit.”

These developments are part of the University of Huddersfield’s transformation of the Church Street campus, and mark a new era of higher education in Barnsley. Until now, the town has been deprived of a University, but these exciting new links with the University of Huddersfield will provide local students with the opportunity to embark upon degree courses covering a wide range of subjects.

The stonework and brickwork is also being cleaned, repaired and pointed, and it is hoped that this will enhance the building and re-establish its status as a Barnsley landmark.

Other developments to the Church Street building include the installation of a new learning resource centre, an art studio, a reception area and an advanced IT infrastructure. The overall cost of this work will be £ 5.5 million and is being jointly funded by the Higher Education Funding Council, Yorkshire Forward and Objective 1.
