University Centre celebrates growth in applications – and launches part-time courses.

The University Centre Barnsley, opened less than a year ago on 1 August 2005, is celebrating a huge growth in applications for its full-time courses.

The number of applications for degrees, certificates and diploma courses is now more than 30% higher than at the equivalent point in 2005. Even more impressively, the numbers of applicants confirming the University Centre as their preferred option for study is up by over 100%.

Dr Tim Thornton, Head of the University Centre, commented: ‘We’re delighted at this tremendous increase. It is down to a great deal of hard work by colleagues at the Centre, and to the attractions offered by a new portfolio of courses and the £5.5 million investment and refurbishment of the building. As an integral part of the University of Huddersfield, too, the University Centre offers applicants the reassurance of joining the leading new university in the north for teaching quality.’

The news came as the University Centre stepped up its welcome for new part-time students. A wide range of courses, in areas ranging from History and English, through Business and Construction, to Music Technology and Journalism, starts in September.

‘We’re already seeing a great deal of interest in part-time courses,’ commented Tim Thornton. ‘It is possible to study on many of the courses in the evenings or just on a couple of days a week and still achieve a qualification in 4-6 years. And the government’s new financial support arrangements mean that grants are available and for many people part-time study could actually be free.’
