The University Centre presented Barnsley lad Darren Gough with an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law at their Graduation Ceremony on Friday 17 November 2006. Darren is the first honorary graduate of the University Centre and was presented the award by University Chancellor and international actor Patrick Stewart. Honorary awards are given by the University to celebrate local people, their achievements and the contributions they make to the local town and its community.
Darren was joined throughout the day by a total of 130 graduates of the University Centre and their parents. During the ceremony, Ian McMillan, the famous Barnsley poet, read a poem written especially for Darren to celebrate this special day:
