As £5.5m worth of renovation work comes to an end at the University Centre Barnsley, it is time for a brand new set of students to come through the doors.
Who better to welcome these students than the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor Margaret Morgan. Alongside the Mayor was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Huddersfield, Professor John Tarrant.
Councillor Morgan chatted to Hayley Kenny and Terry Hibberd from our BA(Hons) Popular Music and FdA Journalism and Media Production courses about why they chose to study here at UCB and how they are finding it. Terry lives in Barnsley and is excited about been given the opportunity to study for a degree right on his doorstep.
The financial help that he received from his Local Authority was a great surprise, 'As a mature student with a family to support I was concerned about giving up work to come back to university but I was pleasantly surprised by the level of support that was available to me and it has been a great help.'
Hayley is originally from Liverpool but after completing her studies at college decided to move to Barnsley and study for her degree in Popular Music. Hayley told us, 'moving from a big city like Liverpool to Barnsley was a bit of a shock at first but it seems a lovely place. So far so good.' The Mayor was then given a tour of the building and the new facilities including our state-of-art industry standard TV studio, music studios, PC and Mac labs and art and design workshops.
