UCB are spending over £200 sponsoring 33 trees to be planted by South Yorkshire Forest. This represents 1 tree for every binful of waste diverted from landfill during the first three months of UCB's Total Recycling Facility Scheme.
During the first 3 months of the recycling scheme at UCB (15 Feb - 15 May), there were 33 fewer general waste bin empties than normal (i.e. large trade waste bins). This has been matched by similar volumes of waste materials going into recycling streams instead.
The reduction in general waste can be attributed to staff and students utilising the new Total Recycling Facilities at the Centre, and making efforts to segregate all their recyclable waste, such as paper, card, plastics etc.
Jeff Cocker, Assistant Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Huddersfield who run the University Centre Barnsley on Church Street told us, 'We are extremely pleased with the speedy take-up of recycling at the Centre, and particularly encouraged by the widespread enthusiasm shown by UCB staff and students towards segregating and recycling their waste in this initial stage of the scheme.'
South Yorkshire Forest only plant native English trees grown from local stock, such as oak, ash, rowan and hazel and they are only planted in areas they would occur naturally.
