University staff member receives Long Service Awards - Steve West

Long Service Awarded By Vice Chancellor Bob Cryan (left) to Steve West (right)Steve West is a senior lecturer in the school of Art and Design at UCB where he teaches sculpture on the BA(Hons) Interdiciplinary Art and Design course.

It was in the early 80’s that Steve came to Barnsley to teach sculpture on the Art foundation Course at Barnsley College of Art.  He continued in this post through the tertiary years at Barnsley College and more recently as a member of the University of Huddersfield teaching on their Barnsley campus as part of the Art and Design team.

He is a practicing sculptor with exceptional technical ability and a vast knowledge of the specific area of sculpture and also historical issues in art and design.  He is from a very creative family, with his wife jenny also a sculptor, and they often work together on projects the most recent being for the British Embassy in Yemen.

Steve studied at Liverpool college of Art and Design and the Royal Academy Schools, London. In 1972 he was awarded the Rome Scholarship in Sculpture and studied from 1972 – 74 at the British school in Rome. In 1977 he was awarded a two year Fellowship in Sculpture at Exeter College of Art and Design.

Since the mid 70’s Steve has exhibited widely throughout Britain, Europe and in the United States. He is presently represented by the Plus Galleries in London and the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery in Neufelden, Austria. He has undertaken ecclesiastical commissions and has work in both public and private collections. In 1992 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.

Steve joined nine other staff member from the University of Huddersfield staff to choose from a selection of gifts to mark their 25 years of continuous service.

Gifts chosen included a cut-glass decanter and glasses, diamond earrings, a canteen of cutlery, and various clocks and watches.
