University Centre Barnsley is a Great Place to Work… It’s Official!

The University Centre Barnsley is pleased to announce it has been awarded the Investors in People (IiP) Standard.

As part of the University of Huddersfield, which has held the award since 1999, the recent reassessment process was able to include the University Centre for the first time. The Assessor praised the people management policies of the Centre, and commented that it was some of the best practice in Higher Education.

Not only could staff point to excellent terms and conditions but also commented on the clear sense of direction the University Centre has, the commitment to provide an excellent service to students, great staff development opportunities, good communication and a sense that the University cared about the well being of its staff.

Head of Centre Cathy Doggett says: “Our ability to deliver the best experience to our students rests on our staff. I’m delighted we have received such a positive report and recognition of the quality of staff who work here. We pride ourselves on being an excellent place for people to work and to develop their careers and the IiP Standard supports this view”.

Christopher Newman, Chairman of the University and College Lecturers Union (UCU), commented: “UCU is pleased to see the recognition given to the hard work and commitment of all members of staff to the success of the University and especially to that of our students.  UCU will continue to contribute to maintain and improve on the University's current high standards of people management.”

Elizabeth Boulton, Branch Secretary, Unison, said: “The unions are always involved in the assessment process and through continuing partnership will ensure we build on our achievements to date to ensure the University remains one of the best employers in the area”.

The University first received the award in 1999 and has had four successful reviews in 2000, 2003, 2005 and recently in November 2008. The November 2008 assessment was the first opportunity to include the University Centre.

Does the IiP Standard matter? Students seem to think so. Recruitment at the Centre has grown year on year. Investing in staff helps the University Centre ensure they can provide the support students needs.
