Students film Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band for new DVD
Journalism and Media Production degree students at University Centre Barnsley filmed the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band in front of a sell-out audience at Barnsley’s Emmanuel Church Hall on Huddersfield Road.
The footage will the be edited and developed into a live DVD for fans to buy following popular demand– it will be the first DVD of the Brass Band that has been available to buy since ‘Brassed Off’.
Trevor Massey, Trustee and Director for Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band is excited by this new project, he explains, ‘This end of year concert is a memorable, grand, musical finale for the Band and is a perfect opportunity for them to be filmed on home ground in front of a local audience. The Emmanuel Church Hall has fantastic acoustics but also provides a very special atmosphere which we hope the DVD will capture. The performance will be primarily brass band music with a selection of Christmas Songs which the audience will be able to join in on. It means that fans will be able to enjoy the DVD all year round. I had heard about the high standard of facilities which the University has not only for recording live music but also for filming the band and I thought it was an interesting development for us to take.’
Milan Bogic, senior lecturer at the University Centre told us, ‘The opportunity that this recording provides our students is fantastic. To complete their degree they must have relevant and professional work experience in their portfolio and this project will go a long-way towards this. Being able to work on a real-live project, with real deadlines and results rather than something that is simulated is invaluable in furthering the skills which the University Centre’s graduates will have when they enter the industry, setting them apart from other graduate. Providing our students with this experience is something which the University Centre feel very strongly about. If this project is a success then we have discussed the numerous opportunities we have to work with the Band in the future.’
This DVD will be available alongside the current CDs which are available to buy at Grimethorpe Colliery Brass Band performances.
