An inspirational evening with Carl Hopkins

"It all starts with a BHAG" - that’s a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal to you and me. This is what Carl Hopkins explained to an enthusiastic audience at the University Centre Barnsley as he kicked of the Public Lecture Series 2009.

Carl recently appeared on the popular Channel 4 programme ‘The Secret Millionaire’.  And whilst we didn’t ask him to share his fortune with us we did ask ‘How did you do it?’ With plenty of humour and only a few of his trade mark profanities, Carl shared the simple principles and ideas that he applies to his everyday life, which if applied to your own lives could see you being successful in which ever area you choose.

The University of Huddersfield’s Marketing Society attended the event and had much praise for Carl. Kimberley Binns,  a second year Advertising and Media Relations student, is President of the Society. She tells us, ‘Carl's presentation was extremely motivating and inspiring. He made the audience aware that all goals are achievable, as an undergraduate I found this very reassuring’.

It was clear from Carl’s presentation that his success is down to hard work and determination, knowing what your goals are and using what you’ve got to achieve them is key. Your goal may be big or small but Carl believes that they are always achievable.

Tom Green also attended the event. Tom works with adult learners in Barnsley and was thrilled by the evening. ‘It was excellent. The best bit was how plain and simple Carl’s presentation was. It was aimed at everyone, at real people. It was in-depth without appearing to be. The time just flew by as I was listening. It was informative and inspirational. His can-do attitude was like a smack in the face. Even though he’s successful he has no silver-spoon and so everyone can relate to what he is saying.

Carl’s talk was the first in a series of Public Lectures delivered at the University Centre Barnsley by top academics exploring exciting subject areas which touch your life on a day-to-day basis.
