UCB Support & Guidance
The staff at the University Centre Barnsley pride themselves in the quality of support and guidance they offer all their students.
Our aim is not only to equip our students with Higher Education quali?cations, but with the knowledge and understanding necessary to be successful in the 21st Century. We have numerous support and guidance services available which includes:
Academic Skills Centre
A designated area known as the Academic Skills Centre, providing help and support for students during their studies. For further details contact: s.daleyates@hud.ac.uk.
Careers Guidance & Advice
Although your aim is to gain a Higher Education qualification, how prepared are you for the unknown once you leave University? In this ever changing economic climate no longer are we able to secure a job for life. However, if you begin to consider your future now and contemplate the skills, knowledge and abilities you have already developed, then this will aid your plans towards your desired employment.
For further details contact: Moira Scothern d.m.scothern@hud.ac.uk or view our Careers web page.
Student Support
At the University Centre Barnsley we recognise that our students are independent adults and appreciate that sometimes, for one reason or another, problems may arise and it is necessary to seek out support. Moira Scothern is the Student Support & Careers Guidance Co-ordinator at UCB, experienced in addressing student problems, offering advice, support, and guidance to any student in all aspects of student life.
Regardless of whether your issue appears small or major, if it is causing you stress and/or worry, it needs to be resolved. Usually talking through your worries and concerns enables you to make some essential changes. Students commonly discover most problems can be resolved quite quickly.
Further advice is available from www.direct.gov.uk
Students with disabilities
The University Centre Barnsley welcomes applications from students with disabilities. The Disability Support Service works with students with disabilities to enable them to make the most of their opportunity to study at the University.
The University is constantly improving its facilities for students with disabilities and works hard to remove barriers to learning and to provide equality of opportunity. It is our policy to take only academic criteria into account when offering places and students with disabilities are encouraged to discuss their concerns at their interview.
Students with disabilities may be able to claim Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) from their Local Education Authority (LEA) or other funding body. These are additional allowances that pay for any extra costs you are likely to incur on your course of study, as a result of your disability/learning difficulty. The Disability support Service can help you apply for funding and assess the most suitable support for your needs. We can also liaise with departments and support services within the University.
Financial support & tuition fees
Non-repayable financial support towards living costs may be available from the government and the University.
Student maintenance loans
Student loans are available and are intend to cover your basic living costs. The amount you borrow can vary but you will not need to repay any money until you are earning more than £15,000 a year. For full details visit http://www.barnsley.hud.ac.uk/finance/fees.html.
Other help
Help is available for mature or married students too. If you are aged 25 or over before the start of the academic year, or have supported yourself financially for at least three years before you start your course, you are regarded as financially independent. You are entitled to the same grant as students who start university straight from school.
If you have children to look after a childcare grant is available while you are studying full-time.
Mature students and other students with children may be able to get help from University funds. Please call the Student Finance Officer for details on 01484 473904.
